A Celebration of Peace Through Art and Words

Building Bridges is a creative initiative that invites Western Sydney secondary school students to explore, express, and share what peace means in their own communities—through art and writing.

At its heart, this project empowers young people to become the next generation of peacebuilders, nurturing empathy, respect for diversity, and confidence in their own voice. It reflects the multicultural, inclusive spirit of modern Australia and brings Rotary’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to life.

Why Peace Matters

Teenagers today are growing up in a world full of noise—constant online debate, cultural tension, and global conflict. It can be overwhelming, confusing, and divisive.

Building Bridges creates space for something different.

It encourages students to slow down, reflect, and ask meaningful questions:

  • What does peace look like in my school?

  • How do we live respectfully with difference?

  • What does inclusion feel like in everyday life?

By turning big ideas—empathy, belonging, respect—into creative expression, students make peace personal, practical, and real.

Our Vision

To empower Australian school students to become confident, compassionate peacebuilders—equipped with empathy, respect for diversity, and the creative courage to express these values in their communities and beyond.

Project Goals

1. Champion Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Every student deserves to feel they belong. This project welcomes all voices and celebrates the richness of different cultures, abilities, backgrounds, and perspectives.

2. Amplify Youth Voices

Young people have powerful insights about the world they are inheriting.
Building Bridges gives them a platform to be heard—and invites adults to listen.

3. Make Peace Real

Peace isn’t abstract—it’s lived every day.
Through painting, photography, sculpture, poetry, stories, and essays, students show how peace looks, feels, and works in their own lives.

4. Connect School and Community

This is more than a competition—it’s a bridge.
Students, teachers, families, Rotarians, artists, and community leaders come together to celebrate creativity and strengthen community connections.

How the Project Works

Theme: “What Does Peace Mean in Our Community?”

The theme is intentionally open, allowing students to interpret peace through their own experiences, cultures, and ideas. The competition is open to all secondary school students. Students may enter individually or through a class project.

A maximum of 10 local schools will be able to participate, with each school submitting a maximum of five essays and five art pieces for judging. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category.

Entry Categories

Art: Painting, Drawing, Photography, Sculpture and Digital art

Writing: Poetry, Short stories, Essays and Reflective pieces (maximum 1500 words)

Entries must be submitted in a digital format by the closing date to be reviewed by a diverse panel of Rotarians, and local Artists, Writers and Community leaders

All participants will be recognised with winning and standout works to be celebrated at a special Awards Ceremony that will showcase the talent in our youth community.

In a Nutshell

Building Bridges helps young people express what peace means to them—and shows them that their voices matter.

Through creativity, students become leaders of empathy, inclusion, and understanding in their schools and communities. For Rotary, it is a living demonstration of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in action—investing directly in the compassionate leaders of tomorrow.
