Navigating Leadership: Norwest Sunrise sponsors Zara Burgess for the 2025 East Coast Youth Leadership Challenge
As Youth Service Month draws to a close, the Norwest Sunrise Rotary Club proudly celebrates the achievements of Zara Burgess, whom we sponsored together with Castle Hill Rotary Club to participate in the 2025 East Coast Youth Leadership Challenge (ECYLC) aboard the STV Windeward Bound. This ten-day voyage is more than just a sailing expedition; it’s a transformative journey designed to cultivate leadership, resilience, and teamwork among young Australians.
The ECYLC is a flagship program by the Windeward Bound Trust, offering youth aged 14–17 an immersive experience in traditional tall ship sailing. Participants engage in all aspects of ship life, from navigating and helming to cooking and maintaining the vessel. This hands-on approach fosters personal growth, self-confidence, and a deep sense of responsibility.
Throughout the voyage, Zara and her fellow trainees faced the challenges of the open sea, learning to work cohesively as a crew. They developed critical skills such as effective communication, problem-solving, and adaptability—qualities essential for future leaders. The experience also emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship, as trainees participated in activities highlighting marine conservation.
Zara’s participation in the ECYLC exemplifies the core values of Rotary’s Youth Service Month.
